How To Renovate on a Budget

Not all facilities have the budget to do a "full rate" incorporation. There is nothing wrong with doing a "half rate" or progressive renovation. The ultimate goal of 1 to 1 1/2 tons per 1,000 square feet remains, but we accomplish this amount over time. With the degradation rate of Turface® being only 3.5 percent over 20 years, we are able to gradually condition the infield until we reach our desired goal.

When doing a "half rate" or progressive renovation, the minimum amount of conditioner recommended for the initial application is 5 tons for a 90 foot field, or 1/2 ton (20 bags) per 1,000 square feet. Additional applications of 2 to 3 tons should occur once a year for the next 3 or 4 years until the target mix is achieved.

At "half rate" it is important to incorporate the conditioner only half as deep or into only the top 2 inches. A nail drag or scarifying tool works well as opposed to tilling. If "half rate" is incorporated too deeply there is not enough concentration of product to make a noticeable improvement. Apply and incorporate enough into the infield mix to keep fields safe and playable. Over time, the conditioner will work its way down into the mix for a deeper layer of conditioned soil.

Turface MVP® Progressive Infield Renovation (4-5 years)

Note: We recommend conditioning your field with Turface MVP. If using a different conditioner, consult the manufacturer for recommendations.

Lightly moisten the skinned area to loosen the surface in preparation for mixing the conditioner into the soil. Do not soak.

Spread 5 tons of Turface MVP. Level the material spread before mixing.

Nail drag the infield twice, working the conditioner into the top 1 1/2 - 2 inches of the playing surface. This will ensure that the Turface is incorporated evenly.
